Review: 'Sanctuary' - Instinct
The following contains major spoilers for "Instinct," the twelfth episode of SciFi Channel?s "Sanctuary."
Rehka Sharma?s shows step into camera, and there?s an ensuing ?Cloverfield? shaky-cam style introduction to our guest protagonists right away. If you?ve sat through the last two or three very slow-moving episodes, this one picks up the pace immediately.
A lot of the set up to the action is done through dialogue, but it?s not overly explained. We eventually learn that the television reporter played by Rehka has overheard police scanner activity and arrived on scene to something that could be her breaking moment for her career ... if she can just get inside the warehouse in which the events all take place.
To keep some suspense for those of you are yet to watch the episode, they find several dead bodies and a worker in the warehouse who tries to help them escape and discover a vicious and fast moving insectoid creature prowling the warehouse.
During their ventures through the building the couple stumble across the "Sanctuary" crew. It is decided to let the camera keep rolling while Magnus? team performs their work.
Attempts to trap the creature fail. Clues lead to its origin. Eventually, we learn the creature is protecting a collection of eggs from its own species. A plan is finally developed to trap the creature alive and it is ultimately successful.
While there is one among the episode?s major players that does not make it, characters are built well, and interest is kept on target. In the end they discover there is more than one insect protecting the young, and it brings trauma to the little gathering of humans trying to protect and study the creatures.
As far as the ties to the series in its entirety it appears the embryo bugs were imported by the Cabal. Again we see that the two teams will be coming to a head-on fight at some point as promised in earlier episodes.
What Worked
This was a fun little venture for the series. I enjoyed the film technique mostly because it broke up the monotony of the last several episodes. The action was well paced, and my whole family sat to watch, riveted to the screen.
Guest star Rekha Sharma was fun to watch. All of the stars had some pretty enjoyable and frequently comic interaction.
The storyline was interesting enough and engaging while somewhat predictable in places in terms of what the "Sanctuary" crew was going to discover along each step of the way/ But sometimes knowing what?s coming isn?t as interesting as how it?s revealed.
I think they?ve got a good thing going here when Damian Kindler (creator) is writing. S.A. Adelson?s direction added a unique look to the show among its other episodes.
Let?s hope they keep this up ... the finale next week looks more on the action side as well, so perhaps the producers have clued into their target audience as the production has moved along. I think this bodes well for a/the second season.
What Didn?t Work
Anyone even remotely connected to the genre will recognize the ?Blair Witch Project? and ?Cloverfield? film technique, at this point perhaps getting a little old, but I still enjoyed it as a bit of variety for the series. Some occasions, especially during the initial meeting of the "Sanctuary" staff and the film crew, seemed to be lacking a certain choreography that would have made the technique a little more believable, but also perhaps less easy to follow for the average viewer.
Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
?Sanctuary? was created by Damian Kindler and features Amanda Tapping, Robin Dunne and Emilie Ullerup. Episode 12, ?Instinct,? guest stars Rekha Sharma (?Battlestar Galactica? & ?Smallville?). The story was written by Damian Kindler, produced by George Horie and was directed by S.A. Adelson. ?Sanctuary? airs on SciFi Channel Fridays at 9 p.m.
