Fox apparently isn't happy with how its proposed science-fiction series "Virtuality" is turning out, and it could face either death or a complete reworking.

The series from "Battlestar Galactica's" Ronald D. Moore set on a long-range starship isn't turning too many heads at the network, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and is looking to either air the backdoor pilot Moore recently filmed in May, or hold the series long enough to allow some retooling to make it more "mainstream."

But what does that mean? io9 writer Charlie Jane Anders speculates that could mean the removal of the show's gay married couple, played by Jose Pablo Cantillo and Gene Farber.

"Apart from that, what do you do?" Anders asked. "The current fad seems to be for shows that appear to be realistic dramas at first, until you realize they have science-fiction elements (like 'Lost' or 'Eleventh Hour'). But how do you do that with 'Virtuality'? Have it not set on a spaceship?"

Anders said he's already reviewed the pilot script for "Virtuality" and says that while it is more mainstream than SciFi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," it's not exactly the kind of show that would make the "Desperate Housewives" or "Grey's Anatomy" audiences happy.

Sci-fi has not been the most profitable for networks this year, despite an onslaught of shows in that genre. "Eleventh Hour," "Fringe" and even "Life on Mars" have been either strong or decent hits, but the rest of the schedule so far ("Lost" and "Dollhouse" doesn't premiere until early next year) have stumbled. Reports already have circulated that "Knight Rider" on NBC and "Pushing Daisies" on ABC already have been cancelled, while Fox almost pulled the plug on "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" before deciding that it might work better paired up with Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" on Fridays.

Even strong past contenders like "Heroes" on NBC has struggled, causing some backroom shakeups and almost definitely putting the show on the bubble for next year, especially as NBC looks to cut costs on its primetime schedule.
