Maybe it's time NBC takes a look at when it airs "Heroes," because a good portion of its audience doesn't like to tune in to the live broadcast.
In fact, "Heroes" had the biggest audience gain of any other series from Jan. 1 to the end of last month when it came to DVR and TiVO, increasing its audience base by 35 percent.
The survey comes from The Nielsen Co., the parent organization of Nielsen Media Research, which provides television ratings data to the networks. "Fringe" on Fox was close behind, getting a 26 percent jump from its live viewership from people who decided to record the show and watch it later.
It was practically a genre sweep in the top three as ABC's "Lost" had a 25 percent gain in timeshifted viewing, a good distance ahead of fourth place "Bones" from Fox.
The gains are based on audiences who record episodes and watch them within a week of the show's original air. Other shows on the list include "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC, "House" on Fox, "Survivor: Gabon" on CBS, the Tuesday and Wednesday editions of "American Idol" on Fox, and "The Mentalist" on CBS.
The audience for shows like "American Idol," "The Mentalist" and "Survivor" are larger on DVRs than "Lost," "Fringe" and "Heroes," however, because they are shows in the overall top 10 since Jan. 1, representing between 7 and 15.5 percent of U.S. homes tuned in.
Nielsen also is paying close attention to the amount of content that is being downloaded by viewers and watched later. According to its research from Scarborough USA, the San Francisco metro area has the largest percentage of content downloaders at 32 percent, followed closely by San Diego and Austin, Texas. Washington, D.C., is right up there with the top four, attracting 30 percent of the audience.
The top movies of the year are, by far, "The Dark Knight" at $530.5 million domestically, followed by the $318.3 million take for "Iron Man." "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull earned $317 million, followed by "Hancock" at $227.9 million and "Wall-E" at $223.7 million.
