Review: 'Stargate: Atlantis' - Brain Storm
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Brain Storm," the latest episode of "Stargate: Atlantis" on the SciFi Channel.
McKay and Keller finally got together -- and got it on ? in one of the funniest stand-alone episodes of the season..
I've been excited about "Brain Storm" ever since the guest list was announced. It's not every day that you get a founding member of "The Kids in the Hall" sharing screen time with someone like Billy Nye the Science Guy on a Stargate show.
Dave Foley didn't disappoint as McKay's arrogant nemesis. I thought the character was actually a pretty good mirror for what McKay might have been if he didn't wok for the SGC. Foley seemed to enjoy playing the part, especially during the scene with the overblown presentation.
The scene with Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson was hilarious. I liked that, like all geeks, they seemed to be smitten with Jewel Staite. I laughed out loud when Nye called "dibs" on her. We saw less of Degrasse Tyson as the ep went on, but Nye continued to deliver the funny, especially when he slapped Foley in the face and ordered him to "Man up!"
The obligatory Green Week message here was simple: Global warming is bad. Out of all the NBC-Universal shows that featured Green Week messages this week, I think "Atlantis" did the best at working theirs into a fun and engaging episode. Sure, it wasn't the most original plot, but it still had its suspenseful moments, and it really paid off for McKay fans.
It makes sense that McKay would take the lead in a disaster, even in a room filled with the brightest minds on the planet. (It makes less sense that Billy Nye would be his number two, but I'll let it slide.) Who else loved watching McKay be a hero and get the girl? I might be in the minority here, but I'm in favor of his romance with Keller. Her admission of love toward the end did seem to come out of nowhere, but I'm glad it happened. It was also great to see McKay defend his lack of humility. It's just who he is, and that's that. Judging by the last few seconds, it doesn't seem like Keller really minds.
The show only has a handful of eps left, and I'm glad to see that this romance is moving forward in a big way. Let's hope Rodney and Jennifer have a happily, Hoff virus free, ever after.
What Worked
The pace, the jokes, the romance, the "freeze lightning" -- it was all good. The guest stars were a joy to watch. Even the fake Stephen Hawking worked for me.
What Didn't Work
The usual. The plot was pretty standard -- shut down the device that's gonna kill us all -- and the tornado effects looked a little silly. Even though I enjoyed it, I'm sure some fans would have rather seen an ep that featured the entire cast in the middle of the action.
Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
"Brain Storm" was written and directed by Martin Gero. "Stargate: Atlantis" airs at 9 p.m. (8 p.m. Central) on SciFi Channel and stars Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, Jason Momoa, Jewel Staite and Robert Picardo, who is still awesome, even though he didn't do much this week.
