You?ve got to admit, there is a lot of stigma attached to the Star Trek franchise.

One would think that making billions of dollars in profits and essentially carrying Paramount through a tough time in the early 1990s would have helped alleviate it. But for better or worse, J.J. Abrams? new and improved "Star Trek" will fight to prove itself and overcome it all.

?'Star Trek,' especially in the foreign territories, is perceived as one thing," J.J. Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter. "Paramount thought it was really important to get it out there and show them that it's another."

The key however is in making the franchise accessible to a new audience and not just the existing hardcore fans that have rallied behind the Trek name over the decades. Part of that means a cool new look for the Enterprise itself and also to develop a new and unique story.

Even so, the latest trailer gives away very little of the film other than the construction of the Federation starship and an overview of the main characters ... Abrams promises there is so much more to see.

Fans, of course, are getting a look at the new "Star Trek" not just in theaters, but also on television. In a very rare move, Paramount has already begun television advertising of the film, six months ahead of its actual release.

"I also appreciated Paramount's argument about it," he said. "Ultimately, the movie does the bulk of the work, for good or bad. And I felt that we had an opportunity to give people a taste of what's to come that would really help us. Though my tendency is to keep things quiet, I thought that this was, given the way 'Trek' is perceived, especially overseas, this was something that could help us overcome that stigma."

?Star Trek? opens May 8.
