Review: 'Pushing Daisies' - Oh Oh Oh ? It's Magic

By ALAN STANLEY BLAIR Nov-20-2008

This review contains MODERATE SPOILERS for ?Oh Oh Oh...It's Magic,? the sixth episode from the second season of ABC?s ?Pushing Daisies.?

?Oh Oh Oh ? It?s Magic? is an episode of ?Pushing Daisies? that has been waiting to happen. Take the fantasy of magic and illusions, mix it up with the usual trademarked ?Pushing Daisies? wit and some colorful visuals and ... .

Indeed, the speeding train of dialogue is in full force in the episode, and if you fail to pay attention for at least one moment, you will be utterly lost. And while that is the shows greatest strength, it can also be its greatest weakness. Not to mention that the adventure regularly takes an unexpected sideways bend with a series of twists and turns but at no point becomes convoluted and watches as more like a bizarre tale.

Even with the randomness of a monkey killed by a falling sandbag, magical disappearing family members and a whole lot of concrete blocks, ?Oh Oh Oh ? It?s Magic? manages to tie the story very nicely into the abandonment of both Ned and Chuck after losing their parents and ends in a wonderful Plexiglas separated moment of romance between the two.

What Worked

Olive muttering to Emerson that the twins are magically delicious little devils and, as always, his sardonic mockery of Olive herself is one of the many characterisms that make the series a joy. Emerson?s dialogue of ?where did I put that rat?s ass that I could give?? is one of his best.

There was also the return of Aunts Lily and Vivian who have been somewhat absent over the last few weeks, and both of whom now have their own individual stories developing (yet somehow, it looks like both will unite in the revelation of Chuck?s true parentage).

What Didn?t Work

Thirty one minutes into the episode before a single corpse is reanimated, surely ?Pushing Daisies? isn?t losing its touch?
