Coming in as a lead-out show for "Fringe" has done the freshman drama wonders, but when mid-season arrives, it will have a lead-in that Dr. Noble would consider a killer.
Fox has reshuffled nearly its entire schedule come mid-season that will not only put "American Idol" ahead of "Fringe" on Tuesday nights, but also give both "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and Joss Whedon's new series "Dollhouse" new nights.
"Dollhouse" was originally supposed to take over "Sarah Connor's" timeslot, something that many observers thought would happen with a mid-season cancellation of the Terminator series that has dropped to ratings low in its sophomore year. However, Fox made a surprising move and picked the series up for the rest of the season, and now will see if it can recapture some of its audience as a lead-in to "Dollhouse" on Friday nights beginning Feb. 13.
"Fringe" has had some decent numbers following "House" on Tuesdays, although it has lost a good chunk of its lead-in audience most weeks. Fox, however, proved its committed to the series, giving it a full-season pickup early on, and is showing more confidence in it by trusting it to hold on to some of the mega-audience "American Idol" draws.
Fans have been asking for a new night for "Sarah Connor" since the first episode of the season because of what they felt was harsh competition from professional football. However, by the time "Sarah Connor" makes the move, football will be over.
"American Idol" premieres Jan. 13, which means "Fringe's" new Tuesday night partner is just two months away, according to TV Week. In fact, "Fringe" will first see the benefits on Jan. 20 after what is said to be a "brief hiatus" through the Christmas and New Year's holiday break.
For now, "Sarah Connor" continues to air Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox, and "Fringe" will continue as a lead-out of "House" Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET.
