Whedon: Original 'Dollhouse' Pilot Thrown Out
Joss Whedon has spoken -- or at least written -- in response to the rumors and speculation about whether or not "Dollhouse" was in trouble, and about changes in his writing staff.
"I know there's been a lot of concern, various fabulous hues of panic alert readiness. So here's the skinny," Whedon posted early Sunday morning on Whedonesque. "Yes, we've had to make adjustments ? Basically, the network [Fox] and I had different ideas about what the tone of the show would be. They bought something somewhat different than what I was selling them, which is not that uncommon in this business.
"Nothing I hadn't heard before on my other shows, but frustrating as hell given our circumstances -- a pilot shot, scripts written, everybody marching together/gainfully employed ... and then a shutdown. Glad I was for the breathing room, but it's hardly auspicious."
Whedon went on to explain that the original pilot has now been scrapped, but it was his idea.
"Once it became clear what paradigm the network was shooting for, it just didn't fit at all, even after I'd reshot more than half of it," he said.
The show is far from over, Whedon said. "Nothing essential has changed about the universe. The ideas and relationships that intrigued me from the start are all there (though some have shifted, more on that), and the progression of the first 13 eps has me massively excited."
There also have been some changes in the writing staff. Steve DeKnight, a veteran writer from Whedon's Mutant Enemy Productions and former head writer for "Smallville," left the staff after serving as a consulting producer and writing two episodes. Whedon also hinted about working again with Jane Espenson, last seen on SciFi Channel's hit series "Battlestar Galactica" and the upcoming telemovie "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," who is expected to join "Dollhouse" as early as Monday.
"Dollhouse" is expected to air at mid-season on Fox.
