Star Trek: The Experience To Be Resurrected

There were not a lot of happy faces in the Star Trek fan community when Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. closed Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton last month.

But Deep Space Nine's Promenade and the Enterprise-D bridge may have found a new home, and it's not far from where it spent the last 10 years.

Wired magazine is reporting that shopping and entertainment venue Neonopolis is close to finalizing an agreement with Cedar Fair that will move The Experience into its Fremont Street location.

"The Las Vegas Hilton was not on the beaten path at all, nor did it cater to a clientele that would be drawn to" The Experience, said Ted Newkirk, managing editor of AccessVegas.com, in confirming the rumors. "People sought out [The Experience] and found the Hilton. They will do the same if [The Experience] moves downtown, but with an added bonus. Downtown already has a built-in audience filling thousands and thousands of hotel rooms. Many of those will go see [The Experience] for fun."

One of the issues affecting Neonopolis, however, is that fans will be forced to pay for parking as they will have to drive into downtown Las Vegas. Other attractions have failed at Neonopolis and it has yet to be a financial success, with many critics pointing out to the paid parking.

However, the most recent owners have been in charge since 2006, and the location was home to the Poker Dome Challenge until that tenant decided to pull out a year later after losing its primary sponsor.

"Because Neonopolis has been such a failure with so many false starts, nothing would probably be mentioned or acknowledged unless and until an agreement was signed," Newkirk said. "I'm otherwise very bullish on downtown in the next few years. [The Experience[ would be a great fit."
