It's not the most encouraging move a network can make, but ordering more scripts is better than the ultimate alternative: cancellation.
That seems to be what both "Knight Rider" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" are trying to stave off despite lower-than-anticipated ratings and a mostly hushed reaction from the networks.
However, NBC has ordered an additional four scripts of "Knight Rider," trade publication Variety says, while reports are out that two more scripts have been ordered by Fox for "Sarah Connor," a show that is considered to be on the brink of cancellation.
Fox made the move to order more "Sarah Connor" scripts despite already ordering a full season pickup for freshman drama "Fringe" and canceling the comedy "Do Not Disturb." Script ordering is usually considered an inexpensive alternative to adding additional episodes to the production schedule, since it allows networks to still decide to cancel a show if they wish, but still have episodes ready for production in case they decide to allow it to continue a time longer.
"Knight Rider" has averaged a 4.4 rating/7 share in overnight ratings in its first three episodes, down 20 percent from the average overnight rating of "Bionic Woman" that occupied the timeslot last season, but it's still nearly 13 percent above the lowest ratings picked up by the show. It also has consistently beaten "Pushing Daisies" since the ABC show returned a couple weeks ago, leaving that program in doubt not only for a third season, but for the remainder of its second season.
"Sarah Connor" has averaged a 3.7/6 in five airings so far this year in overnight ratings. That's off nearly 34 percent from last season's average, and nearly 18 percent below the show's worst overnight rating in its first season.
"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox while "Knight Rider" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
