Ryan premieres big, Angel weak
Overnight ratings elevates the former 'Voyager' star as Fox's new star
Jeri Ryan, the former Borg drone from "Star Trek: Voyager," made an impressive debut for the Fox network Monday night as she helped pushed her new show, "Boston Public" to near the top of the ratings, according to Nielsen's tracking of overnight metered markets.
"Boston Public," the David E. Kelley series that is entering its second season, finished with an 8.8 rating/13 share, tying it with ABC powerhouse "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" in the 8 p.m. timeslot. The show, where Ryan plays a wealthy corporate lawyer turned teacher, and only finished behind the CBS comedy lineup of "King of Queens" and "Yes, Dear," which averaged a 9.1/14 in the hour.
Those ratings were even better than Fox's other Monday night hit, "Ally McBeal," which pulled in a 7.4/11 in the 9 p.m. hour.
Over on The WB, "Angel" didn't fare too well, finishing last in the 8 p.m. hour, typing with the UPN comedies "The Parkers" and "Girlfriends."
For the night, Fox moved back in third place (and didn't need World Series baseball to do it), bringing in an 8.1/12 for the night. It finished ahead of NBC (7.4/12), The WB (4.8/7) and UPN (4.0/6) but behind ABC's night of football (10.4/16) and CBS (9.9/15).
