Review: 'Sarah Connor' - The Mousetrap
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "The Mousetrap" episode of the Fox Network's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."
Last week, we saw the Dixons apparently driving off into the sunset, getting as far away from the Connor clan as possible. Smart people.
The bad news is that they didn't get very far. At a rest stop along a deserted highway, the Dixons stop to get gas and sodas. Driving in behind them is Cromartie, who kidnaps Michelle Dixon as bait to lure the Connors to him.
Charley calls Sarah to ask for help, and Sarah tries to keep John in the dark as to what is going on. Sarah sends John with Cameron to the computer store, then takes Derek with her to help Charley.
Though tied up, Michelle finds her cell phone and calls Charley, giving them her location. When the T Team arrives there, they can't locate Cromartie. But they do find Michelle tied to a chair and apparently sitting on a bomb.
After some investigation, they find that the bomb is just a fake, but the whole situation makes Sarah call John. She gives the password to John, unaware that Cromartie is listening in. Sarah tells John (who is now with new squeeze Riley) to stay away from their home until she tells him to return.
Cromartie has been busy when not in sight. He's disabled the T Team's truck, then disables the phone tower nearby so Sarah can't call John again.
Cromartie calls John using Sarah's voice, gives him the code, and tells him to go to the pier and wait for her there. John sets off for the pier, with Cameron in tow not far behind since she was ordered by Sarah to "not let John out of your sight."
The T Team highjacks a truck, and Sarah drives as fast as she can to get to John. But Michelle's condition has worsened, and they have to stop until they can stop the bleeding.
On the pier, John looks around and sees the face of the actor he saw on the television news, the one responsible for killing many people and then himself, actually looking for him.
He realizes it is a trap, and tries to disguise himself as he runs away.
Cromartie isn't very far behind, and John lures him over the railing into the deeper water. John swims to the surface while Cromartie struggles to catch him. But that metal body is too heavy, and he sinks to the ocean floor while John gets away.
Cromartie isn't dead, of course, just waterlogged. He walks up on the shore to return to the hunt for John.
Michelle's injuries have proven too severe, and she dies. At her funeral, Charley mourns as his wife is laid to rest.
Also during this episode, Former Agent Ellison is approached by Shirley Manson (who is a Terminator) to join her search to find other Terminators. Ellison, fortunately, is hesitant to do so.
What Worked
I loved that Cameron didn't get to John in time to save him, but John used his wits to get away from Cromartie. Our boy John is growing up.
Again we see John's desire for a "regular" life coming to the forefront. Please don't let Riley turn out to be a Terminator. Let her be a real girl.
I liked that Cromartie actually developed a plan rather than the usual "Hulk smash" attempt to get things done. I hope we see more of that in the future.
What Didn't Work
This episode again is lower on the action quotient, but it does have a high amount of suspense. I liked it, but I would still like more action, please.
The thing that bothers me the most about this plot is that we know how it will turn out. John can't be caught or killed because that would violate the entire mythology of the show/movies. And it would also tick off Christian Bale, who has signed to play the character in the upcoming movies. One doesn't want to anger a guy who runs around in a bat suit at night, after all! I recommend putting the group in peril more often. We don't know if Derek will make it, for example, so him being in jeopardy is more interesting.
