Shatner Needs To Blame Shatner Over 'Star Trek XI'

Maybe J.J. Abrams wasn't so evil after all.

The director of the upcoming 11th installment in the Star Trek movie franchise, said efforts were made to bring William Shatner into the fold like his good friend Leonard Nimoy, but a series of issues -- including demands being made by the Emmy-winning actor himself -- scuttled such a possibility before it could even get off the ground.

Abrams told AMCTV.com that Abrams and his writing crew very much wanted to include Shatner, best known for playing Capt. Kirk in the original "Star Trek" series as well as seven movies. However, Abrams couldn't offer Shatner the role size he was seeking to take part.

"The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo," Abrams said. "We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which frankly, he deserves."

Abrams had what he described as a flashback role written in to the script for Shatner, but it still didn't "feel right" to him, especially since they were trying to stay as true to the original canon as possible.

"The truth is, the story that we are telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling," Abrams said. "It's funny, a lot of people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on-screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that."

"Star Trek" is set to premiere next May.
