Review: 'Eureka' - I Do Over
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the episode "I Do Over" from the SciFi Channel series "Eureka."
Been there, done that. D?j? vu all over again. Are there any other clich?s I can add that would reflect the tired, overused and clich?d nature of this episode of "Eureka?" This was another one of those "I keep living the same day over and over again" episodes that we've seen way too many times since "Groundhog's Day." And if you've seen one, you've seen them all (I knew I had another clich? in there somewhere).
I generally hate these episodes because they include so much repetition. This technique of reliving the same moment is getting to be overused, but it can still work. It was done much better last year on "Supernatural" because of the elements of humor that were brought in to a dark situation. Here, well, the show is a light comedy to begin with, which just made it really seem tedious.
The ending, which featured the long overdue death of a major character, in this case Nathan Stark, just did not seem to fit the tone of the rest of the episode. It's hard to deal with important issues and serious conflicts when they are wrapped in a silly concept like this. Don't believe me, look what happened to the Taye Diggs' series "Daybreak," which failed in short stint in 2006.
In short, there's little to say here because this episode offered nothing new. While the time loop concept actually fits in a program like "Eureka," the fans deserve a better script than this. The writing this season has been very uneven, and I fear, despite the presence of a quality episode here and there, that the show is declining rapidly. It's sad that Ed Quinn's exit occurred on such a terrible episode. It just felt like I kept seeing the same things over and over again.
Probably, because I was.
What Worked
Vince?s reference to Doctor Who was clever and appropriate, given the time manipulation concept of the episode. It did get a little boring around the third time he said it though.
What Didn?t Work
The premise, the plot and the writing.
I can't figure out why they bothered to introduce Jack's sister in this episode. The whole relationship seemed tangential to the plot.
Oh, and if I see another gratuitous, shameless product placement ad from Degree again, I vow to boycott that product the rest of my natural life.
Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
"Eureka" airs new episodes every Tuesday on the SciFi Channel. It stars Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson and Ed Quinn.
