Will The Legion Visit 'Smallville'?

The following contains MODERATE SPOILERS for Season 8 of The CW program, "Smallville."

The Legion of Super-Heroes will be paying a visit to "Smallville" during the show's upcoming eighth season and, as luck would have it, the popular writer for one of their upcoming comic book appearances will be the one bringing them onto the show.

Geoff Johns is the scribe of next month's "Final Crisis: Legion Of 3 Worlds" mini-series for DC Comics, and it was announced during the recent San Diego Comic-Con that he will also be the man behind introducing the Legion to the TV series in its ninth episode of the season, entitled "Legion."

"I've known the 'Smallville' writing team ?- Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders ?- for a long time," Johns told Newsarama. "I had an idea for an episode, so we all had lunch. I pitched them the idea of bringing the Legion of Super-Heroes to 'Smallville.' And we're off and running."

The "Legion of Super-Heroes" actually has close ties to the Superman mythology. The Legion is composed of super-powered teenagers inspired by Superboy, who created this 'super-hero club.' Their adventures take place roughly 1,000 years in the future, and they first appeared in comics in 1958. Originally, the team was a group of time travelers who visited or were visited by Superboy. Eventually the Legion was fleshed out, and the Superboy element was removed.

Those stories inspired the "Superman And The Legion Of Super-Heroes" animated series on The CW, where the Legion travelled back in time to recruit Superman to help them fight crime in the 31st Century.

"Smallville" has introduced their version of various characters from the comics: Green Arrow, Supergirl, Black Canary, Aquaman, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Brianiac, Zod, Bizarro, Mxyzptlk, and soon will present a very different and much more human Doomsday. Some of them, especially Doomsday and Mxyzptlk, are very unique interpretations. But don't worry, Legion fans -- Johns plans on keeping the Legion similar enough so that readers will recognize them.

"I can't get into any specifics about the story we're telling because we?re still working on it all. But they're from the 31st Century. And it will be focusing on some obvious characters who first met Clark," Johns said. "It will be written to fit with 'Smallville,' and I think it's going to be a really fun challenge to approach the Legion in a different way."

"But with me, you know you're going to see Legion rings, and they're going to be as true to the core as possible. It's going to be the Legion of Super-Heroes," he said.

In related news, executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin gave SciFi Wire a little insight into one of the new villains for Season 8. Not much has been revealed about Lex Luthor's handpicked successor for LuthorCorp, Tess Mercer (Cassidy Freeman). The producers did disclose that, although she has elements of two past characters, she is a completely brand new character for the show.

"She is a nod to both Ms. Teschmacher (Valerie Perrine, from "Superman: The Movie") with Tess, and then her last name, Mercer, is a nod to Mercy from the comic books," Swimmer said in during an interview at the Comic-Con International in San Diego over the July 18-20 weekend. "But she is neither Teschmacher nor Mercy. We are taking a little bit of both, but the storyline and who she is and where she came from and where she is going is completely created by the producers."

Season 8 of "Smallville" will be flying to the small screen on The CW starting Thursday, September 18.
