BBC Offers $3M To Keep Tennant On 'Doctor Who'

By MICHAEL HINMAN Jul-19-2008

BBC seems serious about keeping David Tennant in the title role of "Doctor Who," and it seems the network is now willing to offer the actor ?1.5 million, or just under $3 million, to keep him there.

The series, which continues to be one of BBC's most-watched scripted programs, already is undergoing a number of changes over the next couple years. "Doctor Who's" fifth season has been delayed until 2010 to accommodate Tennant's stage schedule -- he's set to play in "Hamlet" with "Star Trek: The Next Generation" alum Patrick Stewart -- and executive producer Russell T. Davies, who brought "Doctor Who" back from near death, will leave the series after a group of "Doctor Who" specials that will film later this year to be aired in 2009.

Tennant is contracted to appear in those specials, which includes two more Christmas specials, according to The Sun. But his involvement in the fifth season in 2010 is not locked.

"It will be a new team, and David has to meet everyone to make a final decision," a source told the tabloid. "But we're gearing up to offer him a massive deal. He's interested. Everyone thought he was going, but it's not as open and shut as that."

One of the things that might help keep Tennant around is possibly the return of Georgia Moffett, who was the primary guest star in last season's "The Doctor's Daughter." Moffett is set to make a return in the fifth season already, something that will put a smile on Tennant's face since he is now dating her. Moffett already has her own connections to "Doctor Who" as her father, Peter Davison, portrayed the fifth Doctor in the series.
