'Pushing Daises,' 'Tin Man' Lead Genre Emmy Nominees

By MICHAEL HINMAN Jul-17-2008

And the nomination goes to "Pushing Daisies" on ABC, a series that really cleaned up in a lot of the comedy series categories of this year's prime time Emmy awards earning 12 nominations.

While many of the show's nominations were in technical categories, there also were a few key nominations including Lee Pace for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Kristin Chenowith for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Pace, who plays Ned in the ABC series, has some stiff competition including Alec Baldwin from NBC's "30 Rock," Tony Shalhoub from USA's "Monk," Steve Carell from "The Office" on NBC, and Charlie Sheen from "Two and a Half Men" on CBS.

Chenowith also will have her work cut out for her. She faces Jean Smart from "Samantha Who?" on ABC, Amy Poehler from "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, Holland Taylor from "Two and a Half Men," and Vanessa Williams from "Ugly Betty."

Bryan Fuller and Barry Sonnenfeld both were nominated for their work on the pilot episode of "Pushing Daisies" called "Pie-Lette." Fuller is up for outstanding writing in a comedy series against Jack Burditt and Tina Fey from "30 Rock': James Bobin, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie from "Flight of the Conchords" on HBO; and Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky from "The Office."

Sonnenfeld is against Michael Engler from "30 Rock," Dan Attias from "Entourage," James Bobin from "Flight of the Conchords," and both Paul Lieberstein and Paul Feig from "The Office."

"Pushing Daisies" rounded out its nomination list in a number of technical categories including costumes, hairstyling, makeup, prosthetic makeup, music composition and picture editing.

Sci-Fi Channel did pretty good this year in terms of Emmy nominations, thanks in large part to a strong showing from both the "Tin Man" miniseries and "Battlestar Galactica," which picked up nine and five nominations respectively leading to 15 overall nominations compared to just seven last year. Only HBO (85 nods), Showtime (21) and AMC (20) had more nominations this year.

"Tin Man" is up for Outstanding Miniseries against the "Masterpiece Theatre" episode "Cranford" on PBS, "John Adams" on HBO and "The Andromeda Strain" on A&E.

Other nominations for "Tin Man" include art direction, costumes, hairstyling, makeup, single-camera picture editing, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.

"Battlestar Galactica" earned nods for outstanding writing in a drama series -- last year a spot held by executive producer Ronald D. Moore -- but this year going to Michael Angeli for his episode "Six of One." His competition is fierce and includes Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman for the pilot episode of "Damages"; Matthew Weiner and Robin Veith for "Mad Men" on AMC; and David Simon and Ed Burns for "The Wire" on HBO.

"Battlestar Galactica" was shut out of all other key categories, but did receive technical nominations for cinematography (going against "Dexter" and "Lost" among other nominees), single-camera picture editing for a drama series (against "Heroes," "Lost" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" among others), sound mixing (against "Dexter" and "Lost" among others). And it will compete with "Heroes," "Jericho," "Stargate: Atlantis" and the "Sarah Connor Chronicles" for outstanding visual effects in a series.

And not to be left out, Michael Emerson, who plays the creepy Ben Linus in "Lost," is up for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series. He will face off against William Shatner from "Boston Legal" on ABC, Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek from "Damages," and John Slattery from "Mad Men."

Overall, genre shows received 57 Emmy nominations this year, making a very lengthy list. "Lost" had seven nominations overall along with "The Andromeda Strain," while "Dexter" matched "Battlestar Galactica's" total with five. Both "Heroes" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" picked up three each, while "New Amsterdam," "Masters of Science Fiction," "Smallville," "Supernatural," "Jericho" and "Stargate: Atlantis" each had one each, all in technical categories.

The creative arts Emmys will be handed out Sept. 13 while the main Emmys will be awarded Sept. 21.
