'Smallville': Chloe Is In, Supergirl Is Out

A sigh of relief could be heard by "Smallville" fans when Allison Mack's return for next season was finally confirmed. Unfortunately Laura Vandervoort's return as Kara (aka Supergirl) is not so certain. In fact, the recent The CW upfront presentation made it clear that even if Vandervoort is back, it won't be as a series regular.

"They announced the cast ... and I'm not a part of it," Vandervoort told TV Guide. "We were all surprised when they chose not to bring me back as a regular, but I'm sure I'll be back for one or two" episodes.

Vandervoort is trying to look on the bright side though, noting that the show's star is Clark Kent and her character's appearance was originally supposed to be much shorter than the season-long recurring role that she ended up with.

Next season will be sans Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Between that and the departure of Lionel Luthor (John Glover) and Lana Lang's (Kristin Kreuk) reduced appearances, many fans believe next season to be the last.

That may be a good thing for Vandervoort, since there has been speculation that she could star in her own spinoff.

Season eight of "Smallville" will introduce Doomsday and an unknown female villain. This writer is guessing Maxima, but there have been no real clues to her identity.

"Smallville" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
