'Jericho' Actor Finds Way To 'Caprica'

By MICHAEL HINMAN May-6-2008

This wasn't too much of a surprise for some genre fans who thought this actor was a lock anyway.

Esai Morales, who most recently played Maj. Edward Beck in the CBS series "Jericho," has been cast to play Joseph Adama -- the father of William Adama -- in the upcoming "Battlestar Galactica" prequel "Caprica."

The elder Adama, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is described as a "deeply passionate man with a strong sense of justice -- and someone you wouldn't want as your enemy."

In "Battlestar Galactica," Joseph is said to be a lawyer, but in reported story treatments for the SciFi Channel backdoor pilot, Adama brings his family to Caprica and changes his name to "Adams" to hide his heritage. He befriends the Graystone family, who creates what will eventually become the Cylons.

Morales is the second actor to be cast for the movie in as many days. Tuesday, Paula Malcolmson of "Deadwood" fame was the first to join the cast as Amanda Graystone.

Morales has a very limited genre resume, but did make a guest appearance in the 1997 anthology series "The Outer Limits" as well as a 1994 episode of "Tales From the Crypt."

He does have a bit of a "six degrees" connection with "Battlestar Galactica," however, and the actor who will on-screen become his son. He appeared in eight episodes of "American Family" as Esteban Gonzalez, a series that starred Olmos in 2002. He also appeared in two episodes of "Miami Vice" in the 1980s as Felipe Cruz.

Filming for "Caprica" is expected to begin this summer, gearing for a release by the end of the year on SciFi Channel. If ratings are good, the movie could evolve into a series.
