What? Woosley In Charge Of 'Atlantis'?

This story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the fifth season of "Stargate: Atlantis."

Robert Picardo has had more difficult shoes to fill in the past. Seriously, who could ever pull off a holographic computer doctor, and make him interesting?

So bringing Richard Woolsey, a member of the International Oversight Advisory committee, to the leadership post on "Stargate: Atlantis" should be a walk in the park, even as some fans still question the decision to take the series in this direction.

"I've never enjoyed the challenge of playing someone who is one way happy with the way he is and not about to try to change or to grow," Picardo told GateWorld. "I think that that's an appealing thing for an audience to see a character that wants to reinvent himself, who realizes what his character flaws are, what his weaknesses are, and wants to try to overcome them. So that's the part that I'm most enjoying."

So will this be a different Woolsey than what has been demonstrated during guest stints on "Stargate SG-1" and "Atlantis" in the past?

"He clearly wanted it," Picardo said of the position previously held by Torri Higginson's Elizabeth Weir and Amanda Tapping's Samantha Carter. "I can tell by how they're writing the character. This is something that he wanted very much to prove himself in. And from an actor's perspective, it's fun to play characters that are trying to reinvent themselves."

Picardo, best known as the holographic doctor in "Star Trek: Voyager," will premiere in "Atlantis" when the fifth season starts later this year on SciFi Channel.
