KITT's not the only one with a new driver.
In picking up "Knight Rider" for a series this fall, NBC has hired Gary Scott Thompson -- the writer of "Fast and the Furious" -- as its showrunner.
It's part of a two-year deal Thompson signed with NBC Univesal, according to Variety, which will allow him to work alongside existing executive producers Doug Liman and Dave Bartis, as well as producer Dave Andron. Thompson makes the move over from "Las Vegas," which ends its run this season (but whose hotel was featured in the NBC backdoor pilot for "Knight Rider.")
Thompson will bring over Matt Pyken from "Las Vegas" as well, who also will serve as an executive producer.
Thompson was NBC's only choice for the showrunner's role, said Katherine Pope, president of Universal Media Studios, which will produce "Knight Rider."
"Action and effects are going to be a real priority for us on this show," Pope said, adding that Thompson brings a lot of experience in both areas, which made him a perfect fit to take on the franchise.
Although it hasn't yet found a place on NBC's fall schedule, it is reported the show could end up as part of NBC's Friday lineup, possibly even taking over the old slot held by "Las Vegas."
