'Lost' Maintains Hold As Genre Leader
Although networks have been working hard to topple the show from its throne, "Lost" is still the genre's most watched network television program so far in the 2007-08 season, according to a break down of the first 20 active weeks of overnight ratings by Airlock Alpha.
"Lost," now into its third episode of a shorter fourth season, so far has averaged an 8.5 rating/13 share, based on data collected from Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research, as provided by Zap2it. That has maintained a strong lead over the two programs which are tied as the second-most watched in the genre: "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" on Fox and "Heroes" on NBC, which both have had an average of 6.6/10. However, part of "Sarah Connor's" boost is from a post-NFL playoff game premiere which earned it an 11.1/16. In recent weeks, ratings have dipped as low as 5.1/8, while "Heroes" did not dip below a 6.0/9 in its second season.
Following in the fourth spot is the not-so-surprising "Pushing Daisies" on ABC, which averaged a 6.3/10. However, the show holding the fifth spot so far this season is the now-cancelled "Bionic Woman" on NBC, which thanks to a strong 8.4/13 premiere, was able to average a 5.5/9 despite falling as low as a 3.9/7 in recent weeks.
"Dexter," in just one episode so far, is holding on to the sixth spot with a 5.2/9 followed by the on-the-bubble "Moonlight," also shown on CBS< which is averaging a 5.1/9, and good enough for seventh place.
NBC's quirky darling "Chuck" is ranked eighth with a 4.8/8 while "Jericho" has stumbled into a 4.1/7, and ninth place finish with the airing of two episodes so far.
The now-cancelled "Journeyman" from NBC was the 10th most watched program, finishing just below "Jericho" with a 3.8/7, followed by the smaller audiences of "Smallville" and "Supernatural."
Among the shows broadcasting in the last 10 active weeks, "Lost" once again is in the top spot, with "Sarah Connor" just topping "Heroes" with a 6.6/10 compared to the NBC show's 6.6/9. "Dexter" now has the fourth spot followed by "Moonlight's" 5.2/9.
"Chuck" wraps things up with a 4.7/8, while "Jericho" once again only finishes ahead of "Journeyman" with a 4.1/7 compared to a 3.3/6.
"Heroes" maintain its audience level from the first 10 active weeks of the television season, as did "Moonlight," which has pretty much stayed with a half ratings point of its highest and lowest rating its entire run.
"Chuck's" audience has fallen slightly form a 4.8/7 in the first 10 weeks, while "Journeyman" had the most dramatic drop from a 4.3/7, losing an entire ratings point, and more than 1 million households.
Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by pulling numbers from the top urban markets that includes both live viewing and same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1 million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift when final ratings are issued.
