Review: 'Supernatural' - Jus In Bello

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the "Jus In Bello" episode of the CW's "Supernatural."

"I shot the sheriff." -- Agent Henrickson
"But you didn?t shoot the deputy." -- Dean

"Nobody kill any virgins!" -- Dean

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) finally track down Bella (Lauren Cohan) after she stole the Colt. However, as usual, she is two steps ahead of them ... or in this case, two states. And she?s made sure they can?t follow her any time soon.

Enter Special Agent Victor Henricksen (Charles Malik Whitfield). Assisted by Mayberry?s finest (okay, Monument, Colorado?s finest), he arrests the two ?fugitives? and holds them in jail until he can transport them to solitary confinement in a maximum security facility. This, however, becomes the least of their worries when they realize that the demon army led by Lilith is coming to kill them. Tonight.

After the brothers exorcise a demon from Hendricksen, he finally comes over to their side and the Winchesters have allies in the battle. Not that anyone at the jail has a choice since the demons have surrounded the place, killed several people and cut off all communication with the outside world.

Ruby (Katie Cassidy) fights her way in, and after learning the Colt has been stolen, is willing to sacrifice herself to kill the other demons. Well, herself and the only virgin in the room. Ruby has a spell, but they have to cut the heart out of the virtuous secretary in order to do it. Dean is furious that Sam is willing to consider it, even though the virgin is a willing victim. He has a plan -- open the doors, let them in, fight like hell. Oh, and perform a mass exorcism.

In the end, they succeed in saving many of the possessed people and Henricksen tells the world the brothers are dead. However, after they leave, Lilith -- posing as a sweet little girl -- kills all the survivors at the jail.

What Worked

The full frontal demon assault rocked. Watching the brothers actually fight a battle in the war we?ve heard so much about felt very satisfying. There has been so much buildup that there needed to be a payoff. As usual, the action sequences were well choreographed and well executed.

Agent Henricksen?s return allowed the fugitive storyline to finally see fruition, although I?m sure our favorite con artists will manage to land in hot water again sometime in the future. Whitfield is a very capable actor who made Henricksen likable even when he was gloating over Sam and Dean shackled together in the cell. Great writing, too:"Life sucks, get a helmet."

The tension between the brothers got ratcheted up this week, adding to the complex relationship these boys share. Sam didn?t tell Dean about the demon who was gunning for him, which Dean sees as a betrayal. Add to that the fact that Sam apparently considered sacrificing a virgin on the demon alter of survival, and you have a delicious recipe for conflict that can carry through the season. All this intense emotional turmoil is possible because of the acting talents and on-screen chemistry of Ackles and Padalecki.

Finally, we learn who this new rising power among the demon ranks is, and she?s one scary mother ? er, little girl. Gotta admit, I didn?t see the Lilith reveal coming but I?m glad they went with a classic. And if the "Supernatural" powers that be want to increase their girl power, what better way than to make the new big bad the biggest, baddest, oldest wicked woman in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

What Didn?t Work

Ruby chastising the brothers like unruly children. Even as I watched the last scene unfold, I couldn?t believe Dean didn?t get in her face and tell her to back off. Perhaps he was just in shock because of the news, but his reaction seemed really out of character. Add to that the fact that both Dean and Henricksen allowed her to monopolize the conversation when they were debating sacrificing Nancy the office virgin, and we have a pattern of confident authority figures suddenly turning into shrinking violets when Ruby arrives. Also, I?m tired of her angry high school valley girl with an attitude routine. It will be interesting to see if she ever reveals any other emotions.

I also didn?t buy her self-sacrificing pitch. To be honest, her spiel about wanting the brothers to win and save humanity at all costs has never seemed sincere. And she was never in any danger of having to follow through, since she must have known that Dean would never allow an innocent girl to be murdered.

They killed Agent Henricksen. Bastards! Seriously, I would have really liked to see him on the road later, hunting and working with Sam and Dean. Even though he has been an adversary to the brothers, he was an interesting character. Sure, he was (understandably) misguided, but he always had the heart of a hero. Rest in peace, dude.
