Live-Action 'Akira' Movie In The Works
Yes, Leonardo DiCaprio is still working, and apparently he's been catching up on his classic anime.
The Hollywood Reporter says DiCaprio is planning to work with Warner Bros. to produce a live-action version of the 1988 animated film "Akira."
The two-part film will be directed by newcomer Ruairi Robinson, probably best known for his Oscar-nominated animated short "Fifty Percent Grey." Also on board is Gary Whitta, who is adapting the script for Appian Way, DiCaprio's production company.
The idea of doing a live-action version of the post-apocalyptic film where government experimentation creates some pretty strange genetic results (and destruction) is not new, as Warner Bros. has been looking to develop it for quite some time. Although Warner Bros. allowed its rights to the film to lapse at one point, they apparently were able to re-option it with Robinson and DiCaprio on board.
However, there will be one big change among others. New Tokyo will be replaced with New Manhattan.
The release of "Akira" could be a major competitor with "Star Trek XI," as both are eyeing a mid-2009 release.
