Demo numbers strong for ENT
Variety gives an overnight ratings breakdown for 'Broken Bow'
While the numbers were dwarfed by the premiere of "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995, Scott Bakula's new Star Trek vehicle "Enterprise" posted strong demographic ratings in the overnight market for UPN according to Variety.
More than 12 million people tuned in to see the premiere of the show Wednesday night, giving UPN its second most watched night in its eight-year history. "Voyager" still has the top spot, pulling in 21.3 million viewers through the hype generated by the formation of the new network in 1995.
While "Enteprise" finished second in overall ratings for Wednesday night next to a rerun of NBC's "The West Wing," it did show heavy numbers in key demographic areas that are targeted by advertisers. The show pulled a 6.3 rating/16 share in adults 18-45, and a 5.2/15 in adults 18-34. Both figures were higher than every other show aired Wednesday night.
Men still dominate Star Trek's market, with men 18-25 earning "Enterprise" an 8.3 while men 18-49 pulled in a 7.2, both higher than UPN's other major male show, "WWF Smackdown." But women still checked in to see the new series, scoring a 5.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic.
Overnight ratings compile the viewership in the top-47 urban markets, and because Star Trek appeals more to urban viewers, could see a drop in its final ratings when they are posted next week. However, while UPN finished second to NBC overall, it did beat out all the networks in many major markets including New York, San Francisco and Detroit. "Enterprise" is expected to pull in a final 7.1 national rating.
One thing that Variety points out is that despite the fact that these numbers are lower than other networks, they are impressive when UPN's limited national coverage is taken into consideration. Currently, UPN is aired in only 82 percent of the country while other networks such as CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox have nearly 100 percent.
