'Enterprise' almost on top
The premiere wins UPN the No. 2 slot
It didn't pull the numbers that the premieres of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" or "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," but "Enterprise" has earned its place in ratings history, single-handedly giving UPN a second-place finish in the overnight metered markets.
"Enterprise" was the second highest-rated episode of the night, pulling in a 9.9 rating/15 share. In comparison, the series finale of "Star Trek: Voyager" in the same time slot last May pulled in a 2.7/5. NBC's "The West Wing," showing a popular rerun from last Christmas, earned a 10.4/15.
UPN finished with a 9.1/13 behind NBC, whose night pulled in the same numbers "Enterprise" did with a 9.9/15. ABC, with its premiere of "The Drew Carey Show" came in third with a 7.7/12 while CBS was fourth with a 6.7/20, Fox in fifth with a 5.6/8 and The WB sixth with a 2.4/3.
The only show to come close to the ratings for "Enterprise" was "60 Minutes II" on CBS which won the 8 p.m. hour with a 9.7/15. The season premiere of "My Wife and Kids" on ABC earned an 8.4/13.
The WB faltered with its movie of the week, "The Indian in the Cupboard," which earned a 2.4/3.
Star Trek has a history of opening strong but faltering in later weeks, and the question is, will "Enterprise" be able to maintain these numbers come 8 p.m. next Wednesday?
