Did Violence In 'Razor' Prompt GLAAD Spot?
This story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the "Battlestar Galactica" episode "Razor."
Jamie Bamber, the dashing (and very straight) actor from "Battlestar Galactica" has a message for you: Members of the gay and lesbian community should not only be friends, but they should be allies as well.
Bamber, who appears in the commercial with a beard, is doing the spot for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization, and is part of several 20-second spots being produced with actors including Jerry O'Connell and Jason Lewis. It will air immediately following Saturday's broadcast of the "Battlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor."
"It is wonderful to see straight allies join in GLAAD's quest towards equal and fair treatment of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community," said Neil Giuliano, president of GLAAD, in a release. "We are grateful to SciFi Channel for inviting us to be part of this television event and to be able to reach their audience with this important message."
The "Be an Ally & a Friend" campaign will feature 22 celebrities in all from television, film and sports. and are working to combat homophobia and to visit the civic organization's Web site. Along with the SciFi Channel, the spots will air on Fox Reality, GSN, IFC, Lifetime, The N and the Sundance Channel.
While the campaign apparently has been in the works for a while, there is some speculation that "Razor" was chosen to launch this campaign not just because it's been a highly publicized event, but because some of the events that take place during the telemovie could be construed as violence against members of the gay and lesbian community.
In the telemovie, Adm. Cain (Michelle Forbes) falls in love with the Cylon Six clone Gina (Tricia Helfer), and actually announce their relationship to the command officers during a dinner. When Gina is revealed to be a Cylon, however, a smitten Cain orders her to be interrogated without limits -- including rape and torture -- which lead to the events of the Battlestar Pegasus arc in the second season of "Battlestar Galactica."
Damon Romine, a spokesman for GLAAD, told Airlock Alpha that it was actually Bamber's involvement in the campaign ahead of time that prompted its attachment to "Razor." He added that GLAAD does not comment on programming it has yet to see. A spokesman for SciFi Channel confirmed the inclusion of the spot with "Razor" was simply because of Bamber's involvement.
"Battlestar Galactica: Razor" airs Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on SciFi Channel. Be sure to tune in as new episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" don't return until April for its fourth and final season.
