New Spoilers Explain Trek Near-Reboot

By MICHAEL HINMAN Nov-12-2007

This story contains possible MAJOR SPOILERS for the upcoming "Star Trek XI."

Old Spock, young Spock, and yet another reason for the folks over at Bring Back Kirk to be mad.

Those are the latest reports coming from the set of "Star Trek XI," which began filming last week, as the leaking plot dam turns into a complete flood.

In a new report from IESB, some of how the Romulans -- led by Eric Bana's Nero -- is able to travel through time is through something that should be very familiar to original "Star Trek" fans. That's right ... The Guardian of Forever, a little touch of Harlan Ellison in the latest Trek movie.

According to a new rumor story, Nero and other Romulans from around the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" time period, head back in time through the Guardian of Forever and kill Chris Pine's Kirk. Somehow, an older Spock played by Leonard Nimoy, becomes aware of this, and heads back in time himself, creating a face-to-face with his younger self, now played by "Heroes" Zachary Quinto.

Spock then tries to set everything right, but in the process, fans get a sort of rebooted story featuring the Enterprise, Capt. Christopher Pike and everyone else.

Kirk doesn't just have a bit role in this film. He does get resurrected obviously, and we find him doing something that he only talked about in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" -- defeating the no-win cadet test scenario of the Kobayashi Maru.

Please note that none of this has been confirmed by anyone at Paramount, so it should be treated as any rumor would.
