Review: 'Journeyman' - Keepers

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the latest "Journeyman" episode, "Keepers".

"Journeyman" keeps getting stronger and stronger as time goes on. We have another strong A story (which was rare in the beginning) and yet another strong B story (the relationship stuff). Oh, and now we have a growing mysterious story arc:who really is Doctor Elliot Langley?

The story starts off quickly with a masked Dan (Kevin McKidd) appearing in the past to save a kid from his exploding rocket. ZAP: he is returned to the present, which happens to be Halloween (explaining Dans mask). His brother Jack (Reed Diamond) is still suspicious and keeps investigating what is really going on with Dan.

ZAP, ZAP and more ZAP. Dan keeps traveling back and helping two troubled brothers with an abusive father. He helps the older brother, Michael, leave a life crime and become a car mechanic.

Dan then discovers that the younger brother, Steve, is a Unabomber-type nut. Dan travels back to 2000 and saves two individuals who would have died in a bombing by Steve. With the help of the older brother, Dan is able to talk down Steve who gets helps from his brother and much needed therapy.

Meanwhile in the present, Jack is doing his investigating which includes freezing Dan and Katies bank account. But Jack finally admits he cant find anything wrong. Also, Katie films her video resume to restart her journalism career and things look promising that shell get the job.

Oh, and on a more personal note Dan travels back and sees a young version of himself with his brother. We see a parallel between them and the brothers in the time travel story. Also, Dan sees a secret meeting in the past between Katie and Jack. Katie, freshly pregnant, isnt sure if she wants to marry Dan. To the surprise of Dan, Jack reassures her that Dan really loves her.

In the end, Steve is now mentally sane, but he has a strange connection to the mysterious Doctor Langley and his time travel work. Steve says he doesnt believe in that anymore, but is sure to reference Dans shoes like he did when he met Dan in the past. Hmm:

What Worked

When the series started, the time travel stories were very formulaic and took the sideline compared to the Dan/Livia/Katie/Jack relationship square. But this episode and the last have created a better balance between the two. We are now seeing less predictable time travel stories that arent so overshadowed by the relationship dynamic, but rather are enhanced by it.

They completely mixed up the formula with this episode. This is the first time that Dan actually meets someone he saves in the past. It is also a first that we see directly how time changes and it directly affects Dan, hindering his quest to learn more about Doctor Langley.

I like how they keep building on past episodes: Dan carrying the old cell phone that Livia suggested and now the Dylan McLean's money from the last episode.

I love this new Doctor Langley mystery. Man, I just feel like a "Doctor Who" joke is wanting to come out every time I say his name.

That mystery deepens when the man he saves actually has some weird connection to Doctor Langley and his time travel work. Coincidence? I think not.

Livia saying that she is there to help Dan because he is off course was odd. Is Livia no longer a traveler like him? If so, what exactly is her deal?

What Didnt Work

Ok, my camera training keeps kicking in. What is up with this show's framing? This week is the second episode where I was dramatically jarred out of the story by the poor framing. Over-the-shoulder dirty shots showing faces that are half cut off is just wrong. I dont understand why it keeps happening.

It has been hard to at all care about Jack. He just seems so annoying as a foil to Dan. But we are starting to see that he does care about his brother and I actually found myself feeling better about Jack by the ending of this episode.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

The episode "Keepers" was written by Paul Redford ("The West Wing") and directed by Andrew Bernstein ("The West Wing"). "Journeyman" airs Monday nights on NBC at 10/9c following "Heroes."
