The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Bad Day at Black Rock" episode of the CW series, "Supernatural."
"I’m Batman." -- Dean
What can protect you from a psychopathic hunter on a mission from God? A rabbit’s foot, of course ... unless you lose said foot. Then you’re just screwed.
John Winchester may be gone, but he is certainly not forgotten since his secrets continue to haunt his sons. After receiving a call on their father’s cell phone, the Winchester brothers learn that he kept a secret storage facility where he hid away dangerously cursed objects. But now his stash has been robbed.
The thieves have been hired to steal one single item. Getting greedy, they break open the box to find a rabbit’s foot that bestows good fortune… unless you lose it. Then, you’re lucky to live a week. And now, Sam has it. First, good luck abounds, hilarity ensues, and all seems more than right with the world for Sam and Dean. Then, a beautiful thief posing as a waitress lifts the foot off Sam and things turn very sour, very quickly.
Meanwhile, their old nemesis Gordon manages to extend his power beyond the prison walls and sends another hunter named Kubric after Sam, who he blames for opening the Devil’s Gate and starting the war. Kubric and his friend track Sam down to the motel room where Dean has attempted to safely stash him until he can find the foot.
Dean tracks down the thief, a woman named Bela, who knows the truth about what is really out there. However, she decides to make a buck rather than make a difference by "acquiring" unique supernatural items and selling them to the highest bidder. And she really doesn’t care that Sam will die if Dean can’t get the foot back.
Worried only for his brother’s safety, Dean takes the foot and puts himself at risk. Fortunately for both of them, the rabbit’s foot bestows enough luck on Dean for him to comically save Sam from certain death.
They take the foot to a cemetery to perform a ritual that will render it harmless and are nearly stopped by Bela.
What Worked
Hilarious! Ben Edlund strikes again with his off-beat humor which has brought us comedic masterpieces such as the live-action "Tick" series, the "Firefly" episode "Jaynestown" and the "Angel" episode "Smile Time."
Yet, all his humor would have been for naught if it hadn’t been for Jensen Ackles’ and Jared Padalecki’s ability to carry it off. They showed they have more in their repertoires than heavy drama, kick-ass action, and frightening horror.
It was also fun to see Gordon again. He is the man everyone loves to hate.
Cautiously, we mention Bela. Honestly, at this point, she could go either way, but the addition of other types of characters to the hunter’s world is interesting. It turns the setting from a "monster of the week" show to a living, breathing mythology. She has the potential to be Dean’s Catwoman, but the fact that she was willing to shoot Sam shows she has a dark, unpredictable side.
What Didn’t Work
Honestly, the entire episode seemed great unless you’re a fan who doesn’t appreciate the occasional delve into humor.
Also, there is some inconsistency with Sam and Dean’s position in the hunters’ world. In Episode 1 of this season, other hunters blame the Winchesters for opening the gate, but in this episode they let them off the hook. Except with Gordon, but he will look for any reason to continue hating them.
Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due
"Bad Day at Black Rock" was written by Ben Edlund ("Angel") and directed by Robert Singer ("American Dreams"). "Supernatural" airs Thursday nights on the CW at 9 p.m. ET following "Smallville."
