Doctor WhoGets A Church Service
How close to God is a Time Lord? If this a question you yourself have asked, then maybe you should stop by the St. Paul's Church in Cardiff, Wales, as they are having a special service to tackle that very concept.
The church, which was used in the "Doctor Who" first season episode "Father's Day," is planning a Communion service with music and video clips from the series. The end goal is to explore the Christian faith via some of the mythology and language used in the show. They also will show some clips from the series.
"The figure of Doctor Who is somebody who comes to save the world, almost a Messiah figure, said Father Dean Atkins, who is organizing the service. In the series, there are lots of references to salvation and The Doctor being almost immortal. We are using the figure of Doctor Who as a parable of Christ.
Parish priest Father Ben Andrews also backed up this idea by expressing his love of the series and the ideas of a character who lives out of time generates.
"It has such a great following that we couldn't resist doing something for young people on a Doctor Whotheme," Andrews said.
"Doctor Who" is currently airing its third season in the United States every Friday night on SciFi Channel. It will return for its annual Christmas episode on Dec. 25 before airing its fourth season in early 2008 and fifth season in 2010.
