'Moonlight' Aims For A Family Audience

Just because it sounds like "Angel" and is being produced by an executive producer from "Angel," it doesn't mean CBS' "Moonlight" has to be "Angel."

On the contrary, as creator Joel Silver reveals the series will have a more family-based feel to it instead of the dark knotted themes of that other vampire series.

But even with a light-hearted underscore to the show, "Moonlight" will still pack a punch, at least according to CanMag.

"It's not going to be a violent show at all," Silver told the magazine. "It's light. It's fun. It has some dark edges but it's really fun. There will be a lot of action in it but it's not grotesque. It's a really warm, sweet, funny vampire show."

The series centers on the character of Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin) who is a vampire detective. Unlike common mythology, this vampire isn't allergic to the sun, and aside from splinters, stakes are likely to cause him very little injury.

"Moonlight" itself was originally conceived through a small presentation at CBS, but Silver admitted no one really knew where the presentation was going until afterward when everything really started to come together.

"That's just the magic of good producing," he said. "It was really we had a script that we had created and CBS went through with us and we kind of went through some scenes they wanted us to shoot and we just titled it together with great narration that I was able to pull off, and we made it feel as good as we could. It felt good enough to get a nine o'clock slot on TBS on Friday night but it was just a good idea. But the studio felt and the network felt at that time that we needed to kind of have more of a sense of what the show was. The presentation was just like a presentation. It wasn't really a full blown developed kind of piece of a show."

Despite being known for large-scale movies such as "The Matrix," "V For Vendetta" and soon "Logan's Run," Silver rarely dabbles with television productions. His previous small-screen project was The CW series "Veronica Mars."

"Moonlight" premieres Sept. 28 on CBS.
