Forget what the tabloids are saying. David Tennant will be sticking around, at least through the end of the fourth season.
"Doctor Who" showrunner Russell T. Davies took a minute to talk with the official Doctor Who Magazine to talk about the fate of the show, but while he was very confident about what would happen next season, he was a bit coy about the show's future after that.
"He's doing the whole" season, Davies said of Tennant, who had been reportedly leaving the show midway through the fourth season by various British tabloids. "It was never even discussed that he might leave after six episodes. That's completely invented by the papers."
The tabloids also discussed the possibility that Davies wouldn't be around after the fourth season, and that control of the show from the fifth season on would fall to one of his more popular writers, Steven Moffat.
"None of us knows exactly what will happen after" Season 4, Davies said. However, "there's already talk of a 2008 Christmas special."
It seems like the tabloids have been hit or miss when it comes to reporting on "Doctor Who." While some of its past reporting has not come to pass, they do seem to have been correct in reports about The Doctor's companion, correctly reporting the departure of Billie Piper after Season 2 and Freema Agyeman after Season 3.
"Doctor Who" will return to BBC One with its annual Christmas special on Dec. 25, and will start its fourth season sometime in early 2008. The third season of the show is currently airing in the United States on the SciFi Channel.
