Bad news may be coming soon for fans of SciFi Channel's "The Dresden Files."
A couple of sources involved in television production in Canada have told Airlock Alpha that it looks like Lions Gate will bring production of its Showtime series "Masters of Horror" to Edmonton, Alberta, meaning that if either "Dresden Files" will remain in Toronto, or won't have a home at all.
Last week, newspapers around the Alberta town practically left behind in Canada's film boom of the last decade, said that Lions Gate was considering moving either "Dresden Files" or "Masters of Horror" to Edmonton in return for nearly $9 million in incentives. Which ever series made it to Edmonton, it would likely receive a two-year, 26-episode commitment which could generate a $75 million economic impact to the city's economy.
"Dresden Files" has been on the bubble since its first season ended with declining ratings and almost little notice. The series stars Paul Blackthorne as a detective with magical powers solving monster-of-the-week crimes similar to "The X-Files." It is being executive produced by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, a former producer on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" who also was the one-time showrunner for "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda," and is based on the novel series by Jim Butcher.
Nothing is locked into stone yet, and no official announcement is expected until next week, the source warned. However, indications seem to be pointing more in "Masters of Horror's" favor than "Dresden."
"They're seeing how much of the production team is willing to make the move," the source said. "Showtime seems to be very pleased with the series."
"Masters of Horror" is an anthology series executive produced by Keith Addis and Andrew Deane. Addis, who is gearing up for what appears to be a limited run of a sister anthology show on ABC called "Masters of Sci-Fi," was out of the country and unavailable for comment.
None of this has been confirmed by Edmonton city officials, Showtime, SciFi Channel or Lions Gate, so treat this as you would any other rumor.
