Thousands of fans might be banding together to save a fictional Kansas town called "Jericho," but a nut distributor in the thick of it all is looking to help a real Kansas town.
Nuts Online, the New Jersey nut distributor that has already sent nearly $40,000 worth of nuts to CBS executives on behalf of fans trying to save the post-nuclear holocaust television series, is looking to donate a portion of the money spent on the campaign to help tornado victims in Greensburg, Kansas.
Nuts Online president Jeffrey Braverman told site visitors Monday that he is going to donate 10 cents per pound of peanuts to the community where 1,000 homes, 250 businesses, and nearly all of the community was destroyed by a tornado that roared through on May 4. The company also will donate $5 -- which is all of the profit -- the company makes in its sale of its "Save Jericho" T-shirts.
While a dime might not seem like a lot, the donation would be retroactive to the very beginning of the campaign, which means as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, equates to more than $2,800 for tornado victims not including T-shirts.
It's part of a long line of moves Braverman has done since inadvertantly being pulled into the "Jericho" campaign, started by fans wishing to get CBS' attention long enough to save the show, which was pulled from the network's fall schedule after just one season. Braverman has been offering most of the more than 14 tons of nuts already purchased at wholesale, giving up most of the profits he would receive on such orders otherwise in order to support the campaign.
Of course, Nuts Online has received a tremendous amount of publicity for its involvement in the campaign, including features by both local and national news sources from all types of media. The company's Web site also has shot from a weekly ranking of around 200,000 by Amazon.com's Alexa, to an average weekly ranking of just 17,000.
While there have been reports that CBS officials are meeting immediately to find a way to respond to the thousands of fans who have demanded the return of "Jericho," there has yet to be any official announcement of what network management might do to wrap up or possibly even continue the series.
