Burton talks about transplant

TNG's Geordi La Forge talks to Larry King Live about donating kidney to mother

LeVar Burton, who played Geordi La Forge on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," spent some time with CNN's Larry King on "Larry King Live" Wednesday night with his mother, Erma Christian, talking about the kidney he donated to her earlier in the year.

Christian said when the time came to look for a donor for a new kidney, there was no question in her son's mind that he would help her out.

"Well, when I finally got the courage to tell them that a transplant had been suggested, he just said, 'OK, and I'm going to donate the kidney,'" Christian said. There was "no question, no hesitation. No opportunity for anybody else to step forward."

Burton explained to King how doctors harvested his left kidney, and then transplanted it into his mother across the hall. And the procedure allowed his family to get in touch with its spiritual side.

"This was a remarkable experience for our entire family," Burton said. "We really put the word out and successfully sort of weaved a web of prayer energy that was just remarkable. I went to see my doctor a couple weeks ago, and he reported to me that I'm healthier today than at any other time I have been a patient in his practice."

The operation took place at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento earlier this year, and was first reported by People Magazine after the surgery took place. Christian suffers from diabetes, and was beginning to undergo dialysis treatments just before the transplant surgery was to take place.

"What does this make you feel like, LeVar? I mean, heroic might be a word, but it's your mom," King said.

"It's my mom. I mean, there was no other choice to make. It's my mom. And, you know, I think most people out there would do the same thing, faced with the same choice to make."

Burton and Christian made the appearance on Larry King to encourage people to become organ donors. Although Christian has to take anti-rejection medication the rest of her life, she said her health has been doing quite well since the surgery.
