SciFi Channel To Begin Airing 'Doctor Who' In July
UPDATE: Network acquires third season already airing on BBC
"Doctor Who" is returning to SciFi Channel for its third season, and using the time travelling abilities of the Tardis, will make his way into American living rooms beginning on Friday, July 6.
SciFi Channel and BBC Worldwide Americas picked up the rights for "Doctor Who's" third season, beginning with the Christmas special "The Runaway Bride" co-starring Catherine Tate, which aired last December on BBC One in the United Kingdom.
The second season of the show drew in an average of 1 million viewers per week, SciFi Channel officials said, usually considered to be an impressive audience for cable channels. The second season started to air on SciFi Channel last September, and will get a two-month head start this year.
The third season of the show drew more than 8 million viewers for its first three airings, but dropped to just over 6 million viewers for its "Daleks Take Manhattan" episode.
Freema Agyeman joins the show for its third season playing the companion Martha Jones. She replaced Billie Piper, who left with her character of Rose Tyler in the second season finale of the show.
"'Doctor Who' has become a favorite among SciFi audiences," Chris Regina, SciFi Channel's vice president of programming, said, according to Zap2it. "We are happy to bring the show back for its third season and look forward to following The Doctor's continuing adventures with his newest companion."
