One Thing You Won't Find Here On April 1 ...

... Just our annual April Fool's statement

Yes, I know. April Fool's is a fun time, where we all should be laughing and pulling pranks on each other. Trust me, I'm with that. I love to pull practical jokes and such.

However, there's a time when practical jokes are appropriate, and times when they are not. One place they are never appropriate is in the same place where you read actual news stories. Like this spot you're reading now.

Yes, I personally feel that it's not only inappropriate for news sites to post jokes in the same place they normally post news, I find it completely unprofessional. If you think I'm a spoil sport, or a party pooper, then think about this:

You go to the doctor, and you're real nervous because they found a growth in a previous visit, and you're not sure what the new tests are going to reveal. Your doctor walks into the exam room with a grim face.

"Airlock Alpha reader," the doctor says. "Your growth is malignant. You have two weeks to live. Make peace with God."

You burst into tears, and then all of a sudden, the doctor has a big grin on his face and says, "Hahaha! April Fool's!"

Sure, reading news isn't as serious as getting bad news from the doctor, but the exam room is a place that there should never be any jokes in that manner, and neither is a space that you normally expect to see news.

So, throughout Sunday, you'll see a ton of these so-called "hilarious" jokes in places where you normally find news. Some sites are even getting a jump with crap like "'Star Trek: Enterprise' is getting picked up by The CW." Oh, that's original, and such a hoot. And I really enjoy getting e-mail to me asking me if it's true, and making me look at the stupid site in question to scroll to the very end and not even get told it's a joke until I click a link directing me to a Wikipedia site.

Make jokes where it's appropriate, especially if you run a news site. If you're too immature or unprofessional to do that, then at least have the common courtesy to say it's a joke at the beginning, and let people laugh at your so-called incredibly funny story knowing it's fake. You don't need to fool people.

Please know that if you read any stories on this site Sunday, they will be real. I guarantee it.
