Surprises In Store For Hurleys Next Adventure

PLUS: 'Lost' focuses on more survivors

So far this season, the castaway drama Lost on ABC has focused primarily on the misadventures of Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), chronicling their escape from "The Others." Upcoming episodes, however, will see a shift back to the rest of the cast.

According to the show's co-executive producers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, that includes Hugo Reyes (Jorge Garcia) ... who you may know as Hurley.

"What's exciting about the next [Hurley episode] is it's really in the tradition of some Hurley episodes, like 'Everybody Hates Hugo,'" Kitsis said told SciFi Wire. "It's kind of a lighter episode. It's emotional, but what also, I think, people will really be excited about is we're back on the beach. You'll definitely get another piece of Hurley backstory."

And like previous Hurley stories, there is a surprise waiting at the end: "And I would say, make sure you watch 'til the very last second," Horowitz added.

Early in the first season of the show, the Hurley backstories quickly became a fan favorite as the character reluctantly won the lottery thanks to a set of mysterious numbers : numbers that are later found inscribed on the side of the hatch.

"Adam and I are lucky enough that this is our third Hurley story," Kitsis said. He and Horowitz co-wrote Dave and Everybody Hates Hugo as well as Tricia Tanaka Is Dead which airs on Wednesday. The duo are now considered the unofficial Hurley specialists on set.

"We fell in love with him, and we tell everyone to back off," Horowitz joked. "We love writing for Hurley. ... It's a challenge coming up with any story, but the truth is, actually, the story this week was something that was conceived a really long time ago. So it was one of those stories we've been waiting to tell."

The writers also discussed an episode focusing on John Locke (Terry OQuinn), one of the show's most interesting characters, and fans might finally learn why he ended up in a wheelchair in the first place.

"I don't want to give away anything, and I can't give away anything," Horowitz said. "I value my job. But I will say that that episode, it's been a long time coming. It will create some new story paths for the audience to be interested in Locke. And we fully hope the question in everyone's head is answered, and they're all very happy with the answer and excited by it. But we're excited, because it has opened up some new things with that character that we hope you guys will like."

Kitsis and Horowitz also confirmed that the rest of the third season is set to explore the backstories of Claire (Emilie de Ravin) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews), as well as the two new background survivors that have been gradually introduced this year, namely Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro) and Nikki (Kiele Sanchez).

"Lost" airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
