Christopher Eccleston Trying To Remove 'Doctor Who' Typecast

LATEST: Beer honoring him was asked to remove Tardis

It really does appear that Christopher Eccleston is trying to put as much distance between him and the Time Lord Doctor as possible.

England's Manchester Evening News is reporting that a brewery that decided to honor Eccleston with a beer to honor his work has suddenly been changed, including Eccleston's likeness as the Doctor, an image of the Tardis, and even the name of the beer: From "The Doctor's Orders" to "Salford's Star," recognizing Eccleston's hometown of Salford.

The beer is brewed by a company named Brazens in Higher Broughton in the United Kingdom, and is part of a long line of monthly beer specials that the five-year-old brewery produces. The original label for February featured Eccleston and the Tardis superimposed over the Lowry Arts Centre at Salford Quays with a small tribute to Eccleston. The new label, however, still fetures the Lowry Arts Centre, but all the "Doctor Who" references have been removed.

"People at the Kings Arms in Salford know Christopher Eccleston, as he held his 40th birthday party there and he is godparent to the children of one of their customers," said Barry Phillips, a brewery worker at Brazens. "We were looking at getting Chris to launch the 'Doctor's Orders' beer. But after we started selling it there, word came back from the landlady of the Kings Arms that he was not happy about being still associated with 'Doctor Who' and the Tardis."

Apparently, however, Eccleston -- who now has a recurring role in the NBC series "Heroes" -- is much happier with the new design and the new name. Eccleston was the actor who helped revive one of England's iconic series, "Doctor Who," although he remained in the role for just a single season. BBC originally reported that Eccleston was leaving the show in fear of being typecast, but the network later corrected themselves and said that Eccleston had only planned on being on the show for a year anyway, as producers wanted to show a regeneration.

"Doctor Who" is now in its third season, and its new star is David Tennant.
