Another Attempt To Resurrect 'Lost In Space'

Movie producer wants to continue film franchise

Although it failed to get box office attention in 1998, and failed to become a series on The WB just a couple years back, there's still talk about bringing "Lost In Space" back to fans in some shape or form, most likely another movie.

According to Mania.com, one of the 1998 film's producers, Mark Koch, said that while the film didn't do the type of box office business the studio had projected, there was an original plan of doing a whole series of movies. In fact, New Line Cinema was so confident the film would do well tht the actors, including Matt LeBlanc, were signed on to do three movies.

While those movies didn't happen, there's still a chance that "Lost In Space" could be successful in a series of direct-to-DVD films, Koch said, similar to what the Babylon 5 franchise has done in the past. However, if such a project were to happen, the DVD films would be direct sequels to the 1998 film, because "it still has its fans."

It was unclear who of the original cast would even be interested in returning, but Koch said he's already talked with the former "Friends" star LeBlanc about returning, and he was "keen to play Don West again."

The film opened strong when it premiered in April 1998 with a $20.2 million box office opening, actually being the film that finally knocked "Titanic" off the top of the movie list, according to Internet Movie Database. However, the film ended up with a domestic gross of just of just $69.1 million domestically, and $49.4 million oveseas, giving it marginal profits versus its $80 million budget. The film starred William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham and Gary Oldman.
