Does BSG Scheduling Move Have Emmy Implications?
And no, we are not talking about the move to Sunday nights
When SciFi Channel announced following the end of "Battlestar Galactica's" second season that fans would have to wait eight months before they could see how the events of New Caprica unfolded, there were a lot of raised eyebrows and speculation as to why the network made the move.
However, there seems to be some more insight into the daring move from one network source, and the reason may surprise you.
"I think one word can sum it all up, 'Emmy,'" said the source, who asked not to be identified. "The Academy (of Television Arts & Sciences) is a little sensitive to scheduling, and unless you're a breakout hit, you need everything you can to catch their attention."
"Battlestar Galactica" has been snubbed from Emmy consideration the past two seasons, outside of technical nominations, including last year when a "blue ribbon" panel put together to give underdog shows like "Battlestar Galactica" a chance failed to give the critically-acclaimed series a nomination. By moving the show to fall, the series can run practically on a normal broadcast network run without the large break midway through the season that could last months.
Also, allowing the show to air all of its episodes closer together means that more people involved within the nomination process will be able to take on the whole body of work, and not just the 10 episodes from recent memory.
So, could this be the year that "Battlestar Galactica" breaks out and picks up a nomination?
"We'll find out this summer," the source said.
"Battlestar Galactica" moves to Sundays at 10 p.m. ET beginning Jan. 21 on the SciFi Channel.
