'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Lost' Named TV Guide Best
Annual roundup also includes 'Heroes'
If only Mr. Emmy was listening.
TV Guide released its 2006 best and worst television shows, and surprise! "Battlestar Galactica" is the magazine's favorite show of the year.
"It may be set primarily aboard a spaceship, but this show offers true human emotions and realistic reactions like nothing else out there," writer Angel Cohn said. "Not only the best sci-fi drama on TV right now, but one of the best dramas period."
The SciFi Channel show, despite slightly eroding ratings, continues to be a critical favorite through the show's third season, which picks up again Jan. 21, moving to a new timeslot of Sundays at 10 p.m. ET. It beat out a large field of other critically-acclaimed television shows such as "Friday Night Lights," "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Office."
Coming in third for 2006 is none other than NBC's "Heroes" where the beginning of this series focused on not only saving the cheerleader, but saving the world.
"That catchy tagline helped this new superhero series skyrocket into the popular culture," Cohn wrote. "But the snappy phrase isn't what jeeps millions of viewers watching every week -- it's the great story about ordinary people who have discovered that they have strange abilities."
The last genre show to make the top 10 is one that has been waning in critical praise, but still remains on the radar: ABC's "Lost."
"'Lost' does twists and turns better than almost any other show on TV," Cohn said. "Fans may quibble at the lack of information and answers, but trying to decipher the clues and figure out what the heck is going on is half the fun."
