'Invasion' Cancelled Reluctantly
ABC President felt the series raised the bar
Although the Earth-based science-fiction series Invasion was cancelled after a 22-episode run, ABC Network President Stephen McPherson had hoped that the series would eventually find its footing and so kept the show running as long as they possibly could, according to SciFi Wire. Unfortunately, after a massive drop in viewers, the Disney-owned network had no other choice but to pull the plug.
Since making its debut in 2005, the show faced an eroding audience and followed on from new episodes of the immensely popular Lost each week. McPherson, who believes that it was the serialized nature that ultimately led to Invasions demise, did point out that each week the show solidly attracted approximately 10 million viewers.
"The difficult thing about serials is that, you know, a lot of times you have these mysteries that are set up, and there is a loyal fan base, however small sometimes, that is watching," said McPherson. "It would be great to be able to close up all those mysteries when a show just isn't working, but in the case of 'Invasion,' we wanted to stick with it. We felt like the work was really good and stuck with it till the end."
So does this mean ABC will be shying away from serialized dramas in the future? Not according to McPherson.
"I hope that viewers will give the next serialized show a shot, he said. But I think it raises the bar for how good serials have to be because I think people are only going to make an appointment and commitment to a certain amount on the air."
The full run of "Invasion" will be released on DVD on Tuesday, August 22.
