Trek experiences sought

Book author wants to record personal encounters

A book detailing personal accounts fans have had with Star Trek could be history of the author cannot secure enough people willing to share their experiences.

Jen Hale is looking for Star Trek fans to publish a book through ECW Press from the online community. But so far, her efforts to try and reach Star Trek fans have hit roadblocks as she has had to sift through sites that haven't been updated in years and a community still bruised by the 1997 documentary, "Trekkies."

"It wasn't an easy decision to make (to cancel the project), but over the last eight months, I've sent out notices to newsletters, talked to various people, and have probably sent out close to 1,000 personal e-mails to fan club presidents, Web site administrators and other Trek fans on the Net," Hale said. "I've received almost no response."

Benjamin Winn, who operated The Trekker Newsletter, said he is still trying to keep the project alive with one last-ditch effort to find fans willing to share their experiences.

"Have you ever walked aroun in a Klingon outfit at a Star Trek convention? Have you ever met Patrick Stewart or William Shatner? If you have said 'yes' to any of these questions, or have had any other special Star Trek experience, Jen Hale wants you," Winn said in a release. "What exactly has Star Trek done to your life? Has Star Trek changed your life in some way? Has it made you see things in a different light?"
