'X-Men 3' Breaks Box Office Records
All this despite universally bad reviews
How much do critics rate in moviegoers' decisions to see films right now? Probably not much.
Last weekend, people flocked to the theaters in defiance of what critics were telling them to make "The Da Vinci Code" the top movie in the land. And now, despite bad reviews once again, "X-Men: The Last Stand" not only finished with $107 million over the weekend. That's the largest opening in Memorial Day history, and the fourth largest opening of all time.
It's not yet clear how the rest of the films did over the weekend, including last week's box office champ "The Da Vinci Code" which opened with $77 million. But "X-Men's" opening put it only behind "Spider-Man," "Star Wars -- Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith," and "Shrek 2" for the largest openings of all time. As far as Memorial Day weekends, the previous record holder was "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," which earned $72 million in 1997.
