New On SciFi Channel Schedule: Um ... Wrestling?
WWE to make new home in most unlikely of place
In what is sure to become the eighth wonder of the world, and thus some strangely-produced television movie that will someday air on the channel, SciFi Channel will begin airing professional wrestling on Tuesday nights.
Yes, we said SciFi Channel, and we did say wrestling.
USA Network, which is owned by the NBC Universal along with SciFi Channel, made the announcement official on Thursday, according to TV Week.
The series is expected to air during the summer through World Wrestling Entertainment, the company once known as the World Wrestling Federation. But even WWE fans that might come to the channel to find their favorite wrestlers won't be seeing WWE. Instead, they will see Extreme Championship Wrestling, a brand acquired by WWE in 2003.
"Research tells us that there's a healthy appetite for wrestling among SciFi viewers," said Bonnie Hammer, president of USA and SciFi Channel, in a release. "With ECW, we're able to deliver to those fans unique action with a twist that's perfect for SciFi." "Monday Night Raw" has been a ratings success for USA, and apparently SciFi Channel officials are looking to have some of that success carry over to USA, despite many actual science-fiction fans scratching their heads wondering what wrestling has to do with sci-fi.
In any event, ECW comes to SciFi beginning June 13.
