'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Lost' Makes Emmy Dream List
TV Guide gives its annual suggestions, but this time they might come true
When TV Guide first started compiling lists of shows they wish were truly considered for the Emmy five years ago, actually seeing that wish list come true was about as possible as flying to the moon via slingshot.
But with a "blue ribbon" panel in place to try and create a balance between viewer popularity and actual art, which is what the Emmy is supposed to be honoring in the first place, there's a good chance that the TV Guide dream list could become the actual Emmy list. If so, that would be good news for both SciFi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" and ABC's "Lost" as both shows received a number of nominations from the TV Guide staff.
"Battlestar Galactica" was suggested for three categories in the nomination list, as posted by Michael Ausiello, including Best Drama, Lead Actor in a Drama in Edward James Olmos (Adm. William Adama) and Lead Actress in a Drama for Mary McDonnell (former President Laura Roslin). "Lost" was recommended for one category, Best Drama with "Galactica."
In making the nomination suggestions, Ausiello said that "Galactica" continues to "redefine the sci-fi genre" while "Lost" proved it was "anything but" in its second season. TV Guide also suggested "Grey's Anatomy" from ABC, "The Shield" from F/X and "The Sopranos" from HBO in the category as well. "Lost" was the winner last year, defeating Fox's "24," HBO's "Deadwood," HBO's "Six Feet Under" and NBC's "The West Wing."
Among the nominees suggested by TV Guide for Lead Actor with Olmos are Michael Chiklis from "The Shield," James Gandolfini from "The Sopranos," Hugh Laurie from Fox's "House," and Denis Leary from F/X's "Rescue Me." James Spader from ABC's "Boston Legal" won last year, beating out Kiefer Sutherland of "24," Ian McShane of "Deadwood," Laurie, and Hank Azaria of Showtime's "Huff."
Sharing suggestions with McDonnell for Lead Actress are Kristen Bell of UPN's "Veronica Mars," Edie Falco of "The Sopranos," Ellen Pompeo of "Gray's Anatomy," and Kyra Sedgwick of USA's "The Closer." Last year, Patricia Arquette's role on NBC's "Medium" beat out Jennifer Garner from ABC's "Alias," Mariska Hargitay from NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Frances Conroy from "Six Feet Under" and Glenn Close from "The Shield."
Emmy nominees will be announced July 6. However, ballots to the selection committee are going out now.
