Spider-Man Back in Black in Third Film
Can arch-nemesis Venom be far behind?
Spider-Man wears a black version of his famous costume in the latest promotional poster for the next film in the popular franchise, according to NBC5i.
Released on Friday, February 24, the poster, which shows Tobey Maguire, returning as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, in the new costume. Even though this version is quite different from the one seen in issues of Marvel Comics, fans are wondering -- will the alien entity that eventually merged with Ed Brock to become Venom appear in the film?
The Venom character, a long-time arch-rival to Spider-Man in the comics, has been rumored to be a villain in the upcoming movie. Speculation focuses on Topher Grace playing Brock in the movie, but Sony has not confirmed that is who the actor will be playing.
Thomas Haden Church will portray Flint Marko, who becomes the Sandman, one of the first adversaries the super-hero faced in issues of "Spider-Man" sold in the 1960s.
Kirsten Dunst will be back as Mary Jane Watson, but she'll have competition for Peter Parker's heart from Gwen Stacy, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Stacy was another love interest for Parker in the comics before encountering the Green Goblin.
Scheduled for release on Friday, May 4, 2007, the movie is being directed by Sam Raimi, who helmed the franchise's previous motion pictures: "Spider-Man," which earned $403 million, and "Spider-Man 2," which brought in $373 million. Primary filming, which began in January, is expected to take six months.
