Shatner Sells Obscure Sci-fi Films Through New DVD Club

For $4 a month, fans can receive quality sci-fi movies through the mail

Best known as Captain James T. Kirk in "Star Trek," the actor who has won Emmys for his role as Denny Crane in "Boston Legal" has launched another career with his Official William Shatner DVD Club. Each month, fans can buy a DVD with a quality science-fiction film that most have never seen, according to williamshatner.com.

"Determining what movies get broad distribution and studio marketing support is a complicated process, and unfortunately the caliber of the film isn't the only consideration," said Shatner in a news release. "I've chosen a select group of memorable and entertaining sci-fi movies that never got the exposure they deserved, and made them available to fans everywhere at a great price."

By going to http://www.ShatnerDvdClub.com, sci-fi connoisseurs can find "underground hits" like "Ginger Snaps," a film that received the same ratings on the Internet Movie Data Base as "Vanilla Sky" and "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

Another film available through the club is "Close Your Eyes," which took home honors from the 2004 Paris Film Festival and won awards at the 2002 Swedish Fantastic Film Festival. The science-fiction thrill-ride film is what Richard Roeper (of "Ebert & Roeper" called "one of the best thrillers I've seen probably since 'The Ring.'"

"Immortal (Ad Vitam)," which has never been available for viewing in American movie theaters, has been described as "strangely and almost hypnotically engaging" by Moviepie.com and "jaw dropping, highly detailed and smoothly executed" by Movie-vault.com.

Since these films are not as well known, the club can offer them at fan-friendly prices, usually $4 a DVD (including shipping). In many cases, club subscribers can buy a new movie each month for what it would cost to rent that same film at the local video store. Currently, the website will send anyone who has an e-mail address a free DVD with "Ginger Snaps" on it.
